Make Cleaning FUN

When I was a kid, I would always use my imagination to help me clean and organize my room.

Like most people, cleaning wasn’t at the top of my fun list (it still isn’t), so I did everything I could to make it fun.

As a young girl, I would always imagine I was either a poor servant girl (aka Cinderella) or a princess, and some handsome prince was coming over to see me. I would put on a cute dress and apron and run around my room frantically cleaning as fast as I could. Intermittently stopping to balance books on top of my head, since according to Little Women, that was how ladies trained for proper posture.

Oh the days when my imagination was let free.

Now at 30 years old, my imagination is not quite the same as it was when I was a little girl. I can’t pretend that my prince is coming when he is already here and knows I am a mess. lmaoooo

But there are things I can do to make cleaning fun.

1. Its About The Outfit

Now this part is going to be different for everyone, some people may feel better and more motivated cleaning in leggings and an old shirt. Me on the other hand, I prefer a long flowy dress that makes me feel pretty. I will link my favorite one HERE. You can tell I still hold on to some of that childhood fantasy even at 30.

Next I add an apron. Am I in the 1950s or current times? I don’t know lol But it helps me get in a cleaning mood if I look and feel the part. Here is my favorite apron style linked HERE.

My specific apron that I love the best is from Ballerina Farms. If you don’t know who she is or her business…… You need to check her out! She is literally the modern day Wonder Woman! #goals

2. Listen to Audiobooks/Music

I have to have some sort of entertainment at all times, or I feel beyond bored and cleaning becomes terrible, which leads to me quitting. So I always have something to listen to in the background.

I have found trying to watch a tv show doesn’t help me, unless it is something that requires me to be in one spot for an extended period of time. If I have a show on, I get distracted and tend to move slower or stop cleaning.

So stick with audiobooks or music.

Audiobooks tend to keep me focused the best and I can easily put my phone in the pocket of my apron and go anywhere in my house.

Audible is by far my favorite, and I literally had no idea there were so many free books available on there. Link for Audible HERE.

Here is a list of a few I have recently listened to.

  • A Lady of High Regard by Tracy Peterson
  • Fancy Pants by Cathy Marie Hake
  • The Cat of Bubastes by G. A. Henty
  • A Lady of Secret Devotion by Tracy Peterson
  • A Lady of Hidden Intent by Tracy Peterson

All of these are narrated by Barbara Caruso except The Cat of Bubastes, because I adore how she reads books! Love her!

3. Make a List

I have found the shorter the list and the more detailed, the better for me. If I have a list that is too long, I tend to do the easiest parts first and then get discouraged and give up on the rest of the list.

If I can keep the list under 10 items, then I feel more accomplished and satisfied with myself. Once I am done with that list, I can make another and start on that one.

Example of a list for me.

Bathroom

  1. Clean toilet
  2. Clean counter and sink
  3. Vacuum Floor
  4. Clean Mirror
  5. Empty Trash
  6. Clean Towels
  7. Clean Baseboards
  8. Clean Tub

This brings me to the 4th trick I do

4. Set a Timer

Cleaning can often feel endless, so I try and break things up by adding in something fun. Right now since I am broken(injured….see bio for answers), my timer is typically only set for 5-10 minutes based on my pain level. But when I am not broken, I prefer 15-20 minutes. If I want to keep cleaning, then great I will keep going, but I try and stick to my timer rule as much as possible so that I don’t get burnt out and end up quitting after the first set.

After the timer has gone off, I reset the timer for the same amount of time and do something I enjoy. Watch my show, craft, game, scroll on my phone. Whatever I prefer.

I consider it a reward!!

Once my timer goes off again, then the process repeats. How many times is up to you and how your day is laid out.

5. Clean in Zones

I find that I am more productive if I clean or organize in zones. So, bathroom, entry way, living room, kitchen, bedroom and so on. My room seems to always get the most crazy looking, so sometimes I have to break that up into sections and focus on one at a time.

For my brain, its better to see improvements to keep me focused.

6. Good Smells

I love candles! Ughhhh if my house smells good, it’s an instant pick me up! So as soon as I start cleaning, I light a candle. It makes me feel so much better. I also use this linen spray that I absolutely LOVE!!!! Link for it HERE on Amazon, and its a must when doing laundry, I even spray my couch with it.

Ending

So I know these tips don’t probably seem all that crazy to some of you, but they are a way to help trick my mind into thinking cleaning can be at least a little fun.

You can modify all of these to fit what helps you the best. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to cleaning/organizing. Every person is different.

Let me know in the comments if you have any other tips and tricks I can try!

Ok, love you byeee!
